After a year-long testing phase, the Creos Living Lab project was completed in July 2025, providing valuable insights into how smart grids and active customer participation can support the energy transition.

As electricity demand grows and renewable energy production increases, the project explored practical ways to make better use of existing grid infrastructure while maintaining customer comfort. One of the key findings is clear: customer behavior is an essential part of the solution.

Simple actions, such as charging electric vehicles outside evening peak hours or increasing the self-consumption of solar energy, proved effective and were easily adopted by participants. For example, EV charging can be scheduled to start after 23:00 using the vehicle’s calendar function. Similar scheduling options are also available for household appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines.

The Living Lab also demonstrated the value of smart grid technologies. Forecast-based control helped manage high solar production on sunny days, while real-time control proved effective in addressing both consumption and production peaks. At the same time, the project confirmed that a resilient low-voltage grid cannot rely on one single solution or one single actor. The energy transition is a shared effort. The Creos Living Lab has shown that practical, scalable solutions are already within reach.
