The network capacity map provides an overview of the available electrical capacities on the networks operated by Creos at voltage levels of 380, 220, 110, 65, and 20 kV.

Objective

The network capacity map provides an overview of the available electrical capacities on the networks operated by Creos at voltage levels of 380, 220, 110, 65, and 20 kV. This tool is primarily intended to provide information on the available injection capacities at the various high-voltage/medium-voltage substations. It is a purely informational tool and does not constitute any contractual commitment regarding capacity allocation.

To reserve injection capacity on the electrical network, each project developer must submit a formal request via the myCreos platform. An information note, available in the “Documents to download” section at the bottom of this page, details the capacity reservation process for electricity generation units based on renewable energy sources. Each request for injection capacity reservation is subject to a detailed analysis, regardless of the availability shown on the public map. The assessment may include, in consultation with the project developer, flexible connection solutions (Flexible Connection Agreement) or, where applicable, network reinforcement solutions.
 

Source and status of published data

The capacity map is based on the following information:

  • the location and rated power of transformers, as well as the maximum capacities of power lines;
  • the loads recorded at substations over the past twelve months;
  • the capacities reserved for projects under development;
  • planned infrastructure reinforcement projects.

The data displayed on the website is updated four times a year.

 

Available capacities

The map illustrates the residual capacity at the selected point in the network, taking into account:

  • the actual utilisation of already connected installations (occasional extreme values are excluded);
  • confirmed capacity reservations for future projects under development;
  • projects currently on the waiting list;
  • correction factors (simultaneity, probability of realization);
  • projects for the reinforcement and extension of electrical infrastructure.

Reservations are regularly reviewed and adjusted in accordance with the capacity reservation process published on our website.
 

How to read the map?

The map shows the high-voltage substations corresponding to the selected criteria, as well as the available capacities. The displayed results depend on the parameters chosen by the user:

  • the requested injection capacity volume;
  • the selected reference year (2026, 2030, or 2035);
  • the user type (Injection or Withdrawal).

At this stage, consultation is limited to injection capacities. A color code is assigned to each substation to provide a visual indication of the situation:

  • red: congested substation
  • orange to green: increasing level of availability
     

Connection requests

For any concrete and binding connection request, the official procedure via the portal my.creos.net must be followed.

As part of the detailed project analysis, Creos takes into account additional technical parameters, in particular:

  • the detailed configuration of substations;
  • short-circuit currents;
  • alternative voltage levels.

In the event of congestion at the selected voltage level, the in-depth analysis will also examine the possibility of connection at a higher voltage level. The longer the project time horizon, the more the estimates may evolve. Consequently, the final connection proposal may differ from the indicative capacities displayed on the map.

For requests placed on the waiting list, applicants will be contacted progressively as capacity becomes available on the network or, at the latest, two years before new capacity becomes available following network reinforcement. They will then have the opportunity to confirm their need and reserve the newly available capacity. If no confirmation is received within the specified timeframe, the request will be removed from the waiting list.

FAQ Grid Hosting Capacity

What should I do if the network capacity shown on the map is insufficient for my needs?

Insufficient capacity does not automatically mean that a connection request will be refused. The network capacity may prove to be sufficient following a detailed connection study, which may involve topological optimisations or network reinforcement. Furthermore, capacity reservations may be released. Please do not hesitate to contact Creos if you have a specific project.

Is a connection study still necessary if the map shows sufficient capacity?

Yes, the map provides only a general overview of network capacity for a given period. Any planned project must go through the study process to establish a power reservation or a connection request.

When is a power reservation required?

A power reservation is required to ensure that power is available before the start of any large-scale project. Without a power reservation, Creos cannot guarantee a connection to its network, regardless of the availability shown on the map. The information sheet on power reservations is available under the ‘Documents to download’ section at the bottom of the page.

When should I submit my connection application?

How can there be stations that simultaneously have available capacities and capacities on the waiting list?

The capacities shown on the Capacity Map aggregate connection requests across all underlying voltage levels. As a result, available capacity and waitlisted capacity can coexist at the same station. While capacity may still be available at the station's higher voltage level, some connection requests are waitlisted because of constraints on downstream networks.

Other reasons may include individual station limits that are not directly correlated to the capacity of the station. These include circumstances such as limited cell availability (e.g. the Bascharage and Schifflange stations, currently planned to be modernized (DNDP)), the awaited construction of a new transformer station (e.g. the Sanem/Woiwer and Wolser stations (DNDP)) , the waitlisted requests exceeding the available capacity or Creos awaiting client feedback.

Why do so many stations at and above the 65 kV voltage level indicate the same available capacities?

At the 65 and 110 kV levels, the HV stations are grouped into geographical regions. At these voltage levels, each map point corresponding to a HV/MV station displays the entire regionally available capacity. The same principle applies to the VHV/HV stations at the 220 and 380 kV levels, which are considered part of a single, national region, where the available capacity calculation is based on the national import and export capacity and the underlying connection requests. Correspondingly, if a certain capacity is connected at a given station, the available capacity of all stations in the region will decrease by that amount.

Why do the reserved and waitlisted capacities increase with higher voltage levels?

The successive increase of the reserved and waitlisted capacities per station with higher voltage levels is due to the reservations and waiting lists being aggregated across voltage levels. For instance, the 20 kV map points contain the capacities to be connected at the MV network or substation level, while the 65 and 110 kV map points contain those to be connected at both the MV and HV networks and substation levels in the given region. Accordingly, the 220 and 380 kV map points contain all of the reservations and waiting lists of the lower levels plus those to be connected directly to the VHV grid.

This also explains why free capacity and waitlisted capacity may coexist at higher voltage levels. While capacity is still available at the higher voltage levels, the waitlisted capacity results from constraints at the lower voltage levels.

Why do the reserved and waitlisted capacities decrease over the years?

The values shown for 2026 include all projects currently on the reservation and waiting lists. The values displayed for 2030 and 2035 are estimates, assuming that a share of the reserved capacities will have been commissioned and that some waitlisted projects will have received a grid connection following planned grid reinforcements. As a result, the amount of reserved and waitlisted capacity is expected to decrease over time.
